(Blissfield, MI) Mike Uckele, CEO of Uckele Health & Nutrition in Blissfield, Michigan, has been named the 2011 Michigan Small Business Person of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Founded as a supplier of supplements for swine in the early 1960s by William Uckele in the basement of his farmhouse, Uckele Health & Nutrition has since built a global reputation through three generations as a trusted leader in the formulation, development and manufacture of nutritional supplements for people and their animals.
Michael Uckele, a Certified Nutritionist, has developed outstanding nutritional formulations and programs for the last 20 years. He is the third generation owner and has helped the company experience significant growth and development in the nutritional field.
In a congratulatory letter, SBA Administrator Karen Mills said, "Your hard work, innovative ideas, and dedication to your community have helped you succeed. The SBA is pleased to recognize your achievements and your role in driving our nation's economic growth."
Uckele says, "I am tremendously honored to be recognized by this federal agency, whose sole mission is to preserve free competitive enterprise and maintain and strengthen the overall economy of our nation."
A multi-diverse company, Uckele Health & Nutrition now provides nutritional products and services to animals and humans for over 50,000 customers in nearly 40 countries. From January through October 2009, sales have increased 34 percent, as well as an average growth of 22 percent in the past five years. In the last year, Uckele has increased the number of employees from 50 full-time employees and 7 temporaries, to 60 full-time employees and 19 temporaries.

Uckele's primary focus remains to continually develop unique formulas for a large, diverse product base to address every nutritional need. Uckele has created thousands of innovative, proprietary formulas for the Uckele brand, which serves as a prototype for over 100 contract private label companies for whoem Uckele manufactures product lines.
Uckele Health & Nutrition was listed on both the 2009 and 2010 Inc. 500/5000 list of the fastest growing companies in the country, and was the recipient of the Better Business Bureau's 2009 Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics and the 2008 Entrepreneurial Business Excellence award for SE Michigan and NW Ohio. In addition, Michael is on the Board of Directors for the National Animal Supplement Council.
Michael Uckele is actively involved with his community, coaching his son's many sports teams and providing nutritional consulting to various groups. Uckele was presented this prestigious award on April 28 at the seventh annual Michigan Celebrates Small Business awards event at The Lansing Center in Lansing.
