I just got a horse that had uveitis (moonblindness). Is there anything I can give her to prevent it from coming back, and it is also starting in the other eye.
Dear Carolyn, Thank you for your inquiry. I am sorry to hear your horse has night blindness, although it is great that you are looking at preventative measures. Prevention will make a difference in the quality of life for your horse & your future relationship as well! This is a serious condition which often recurs & could lead to loss of the eye.
Sadly there is a great deal of pain with this disease, so watch for persistent tearing & if she closes her eyes when in bright light. I may repeat "some" of what you have heard from your veterinarian, but since we have not spoken before your E mail, I want to give you as much information as possible.
It may be hard to imagine, but uveitis (moon blindness) may be caused by an infection within the eyeball due to a low immune system. Most importantly this disease has a FAST onset-so start prevention right away! That is your first GOOD clue- build the immune system. As with other illness of the horse, they can't occur if the horses' immune system is strong enough to keep them from setting in. My biggest concern is that very potent drugs are used to fight this disease- unfortunately while helping in some ways the drugs can also lower the immune system- it's a vicious battle, but one you must fight.
Herbs are primarily used for prevention, so I suggest a look at herbal eye supports along with supporting the LIVER. The liver filters the blood & then the blood is supposed to be clean & re-circulated. If the liver can't filtered enough it will still re-circulate so some of those toxins may be left to do more harm.
That's why building the liver first will really help the overall health of your horse. One thing I know nothing about is the current state of health of your horse. If he is still exhibiting signs of a low immune system or any infection, then that needs to be address first. Actually you may have seen no signs of either- but that is the root of the disease, so it has been an issue.
