Prepare Your Horse for Seasonal Weather Changes

Lebanon, PA – As fall approaches, pastures will experience a flush of growth that will cause a drastic change in the composition of the grass. At this time fructans and sugars will accumulate quickly in the grass. When horses eat large quantities of sugars they are not always able to digest all the sugars before they reach the hindgut. The introduction of sugars into the hindgut changes the pH in the cecum and can cause alterations in the population of microflora resulting in colic or laminitis.

Preventing Ulcers in Your Horse

Because of the expanding number of horse owners who are aware of ulcers, I often get questions about how to prevent ulcers if their horse:

- is going on antibiotic therapy

- must be confined due to an injury or illness

- is heading into training for the first time (especially young horses)

These are all great questions, and each has a different answer.
