Homes for Horses Coalition Members Attend Special Horse Training Clinic
The hands-on training was designed to support rescue centers who often handle horses who have been through traumatic experiences. The live clinic, which was preceded by a six month program of training videos and individual support called Plan 4 Progress, was held at The Fund for Animals’ Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch, an affiliate of The Humane Society of the United States, in Murchison, Texas.
Cindy Gendron, The Homes for Horses Coalition coordinator, said: “This clinic was the culmination of an innovative and unprecedented program for equine rescue organizations. It was a priceless opportunity for staff and volunteers of rescue facilities to grow in their skills to prepare horses for new lives and to feel the support of others who make daily sacrifices for at-risk equines.”
Trainer Trevor Carter designed and taught the three-day clinic to representatives of 11 rescue centers from across the United States. His teaching experience and knowledge in developing and rehabilitating horses have made him the perfect fit to guide others who train rescue horses through this high level topic. The program focused on the safe evaluation, handling and effective training of horses who are difficult and potentially dangerous when catching and haltering, leading and tying, trailer loading, vetting, trimming and shoeing.
This unique program was designed to further empower and equip rescues with techniques and methods they need to more effectively and successfully re-home horses as willing partners. The cost of the program was subsidized by The Humane Society of the United States, and sixteen individuals received additional assistance in the form of scholarships to attend the clinic. Rescue organizations who participated in the Plan 4 Progress will be given the opportunity to continue with an advanced level video series in the coming year.
