Witch hazel extract is a natural astringent hydrosol made from the bark, leaves, and stems of the witch hazel shrub or tree. Native to Atlantic North America, this lovely shrub can reach a height of 15 feet. Witch hazel flowers in the fall, producing vivid yellow colors. Native Americans even used witch hazel leaves and bark as a poultice to reduce swelling and inflammation, slow bleeding, and to draw tissue together. The extract was prepared by rolling the stems.
